-
The Key is what will be selectable when you use the custom attribute as as Message Variable.
-
The Key cannot be changed or edited once saved. Make sure you are giving it the name you want to keep forever before you click Create.
-
Spaces cannot be used in the Team Custom Attribute Key. We recommend using an underscore or dash to separate words.
-
-
Value: This is the field you want to dynamically populate when you use the Team Custom Attribute, so add in your main information here. For example, if you were to create the “Store Phone Number” custom attribute, you would populate the phone number in this field.
-
Label: This is a secondary field that you can use to dynamically populate additional information. you can add extra information here that further details the Value. For example, if you were to create the “Store Phone Number” custom attribute, you could add a sentence with instructions in this field, which you might wish to insert into a text message after the phone number.
-
Description: This field is for you to reference later and is a good place to add additional narrative information related to the Team Custom Attribute you have created.
-
Click Create to save the Team Custom Attribute.

Using Custom Attributes in Messages
Team and Contact Custom Attributes can be used in Campaigns or Templates through Message Variables.
Let’s look at an example of using several custom attributes to build a personalized Campaign message. In the example, we are going to use the contact’s first name, the manager’s name, and the location’s name.
-
While on the Create Campaign Message page, click into the Body box.
-
Type what you want your message to read, optionally using placeholders where you will insert Custom Attributes as Message Variables:
-
Highlight or place your cursor where you want to insert the Message Variable:
-
Click on the blue i icon.
-
You will see a new window pop-up with your Message Variables available to insert. Note that the variables/custom attributes are categorized by whether they are Team or Contact custom attributes or other types.
-
Once you click on the Message Variable you'd like to add (displayed as the Key of that Custom Attribute), you will see syntax indicating the Message Variable type, as well as the specific variable inserted, between two curly brackets (e.g., {{contact=>first_name}}. Do not modify this syntax.
-
Repeat the process until all Custom Attributes have been filed.
Once you have written the message body of your text and added in your Message Variables, you can preview what the text will look like to specific contacts. Use the See It Live button to access this preview.
-
Click the See It Live button indicated in the screenshot above. A new popup modal will appear.
-
In the first box, begin typing a contact name or phone number; contacts matching your typing will begin to appear. Select the contact you want to preview the message for.
-
Once you select the desired contact, the text will appear in the second box, populating any included Message Variable(s) with their relevant information. If the Message Variable(s) are not included in the message correctly or are blank for that contact, they will not appear, and you should edit the message to only include information dynamically that each contact receiving the message will have available to them.
-
To close the See It Live modal, click Done.
-
If you do not like how the text looks, you can edit the message at this time.
-
You can click the See it Live button and try different contacts as many times as you would like until you are satisfied with text.
-
Once you are happy with the text and any included Message Variable(s), click Create Message in the bottom right-hand corner.
